A new school year has begun! Growing up, my favorite part of going back to school was always the shopping. New shoes, gel pens, sparkly backpack… that first day was a day to impress, no matter the grade. Plus, who doesn’t love taking photos of the kiddos when they’re looking so adorable and excited for that first day!
Shopping locally is something I try to do as much as I can. Supporting small business is key in today’s world of Amazon and Target taking over everything. But Chicago has a keen market on children’s stores, and the neighborhood I live in is no exception! These stores are just a couple of my faves.

Organic, soft cotton is the name of the game here. Unicorns, dinosaurs, hot dogs, and cherries are just a couple of the whimsical prints the store carries in uber comfortable stretch cotton. The fabric is so breathable and comfy! Plus, the storefront is just too cute, complete with a cookie bar (hello to distracting the kids while we shop!). Also, a major plus of Monica and Andy is that if you have a younger one at home still, they offer music classes in the morning to enjoy while the older ones are in school!

Ah, yes Little Threads… one of my favorite local joints. Adorable clothes and even cuter accessories are stocked full at this boutique. Everything you can imagine for a little one is here! I love the practical nature of their clothes but its girly enough for my little princess to catch her eye! And if you have a toddler boy who loves accessories like mine does (lol) there are tons of fun hats, sunglasses, and backpacks to complete their cool look. One other great thing about this store is that there is a story time and music class at this location! Mondays at 11 is story time with Ms. Rachel and she is wonderful! Thursdays at 10:30 is Music and Movement with Michael’s Music Machine, a fun time for the kiddos to dance and sing.

Those are just two of my faves in the city… but, being a normal mom, I also find myself at Kohl’s at 9pm the night after the first day of school because my daughter suddenly wants to be all Sporty Spice instead of Baby Spice, upheaving her entire wardrobe LOL! Where are your favorite places to shop for kids clothes in the city? Let me know!
