Looking for the best things to do in Chicago this weekend? You landed in the right place. This is one of those weekends where Chicago actually delivers. Free events, free architecture tours, a street festival on State Street, and Spooky Zoo at Lincoln Park Zoo, all happening Saturday and Sunday, October 16-18, 2026. I pulled together everything worth your time so you do not have to scroll through five different event sites to figure it out.

Let’s go.

The Best Things to Do in Chicago This Weekend, October 16-18, 2026

Spooky Zoo at Lincoln Park Zoo

Saturday, October 17 | Free | All Ages | Lincoln Park Zoo, 2001 N. Clark St.

Lincoln Park Zoo turns fully spooky on Saturday and it is one of the best free family events Chicago does all year. Trick-or-treating with sustainably sourced candy, a scavenger hunt through the zoo grounds, free carousel rides, and keeper chats and learning stations tucked throughout. The Auxiliary Board runs this one and they do not cut corners. Zoo hours are 8am to 5pm. No tickets, no registration. Just show up.

Local tip: Cannon Drive parking fills by 9am on event Saturdays. Take the Brown Line to Armitage and walk west through the neighborhood, or bike in on the Lakefront Trail. It is a much better arrival than circling for a spot.

Pre-zoo breakfast stop: Levain Bakery on Armitage (849 W. Armitage Ave.) is the one local moms have been talking about since it opened last fall. Massive, warm, genuinely excellent. Go early. Post-zoo lunch, walk the kids over to Schneider Deli on Halsted (1733 N. Halsted St.) for bagels, pastrami, and latkes. It opened in April and has already become a neighborhood staple. That stretch of Halsted and Armitage is exactly the kind of walkable, everything-at-your-fingertips block that makes Lincoln Park what it is.

🏡 Realtor mom take: Lincoln Park Zoo is free. The neighborhood around it is not, and that is the point. When I sold 1155 W. Armitage last week with multiple offers, this is the life I was selling alongside the square footage. You walk out your front door and this is your Saturday. If you have been thinking about Lincoln Park and want to see what the market looks like right now, start here. I will show you what is actually available and what it is worth. 🍂🦁

Not sure where to start on the buying side? Fill out a quick form and I will send you a curated list of homes that match what you are looking for, including off-market options.

Open House Chicago 2026

Saturday and Sunday, October 17-18 | Free | No Registration | 200+ Sites Across 30 Neighborhoods

This is the one. Open House Chicago is back for its 16th year and it is genuinely one of the best things this city does for free. Over 200 buildings and sites open their doors across 30 Chicago neighborhoods, no tickets, no registration required. The Chicago Architecture Center organizes it and they include places that are normally closed to the public entirely.

This year’s lineup includes 20 new sites. Highlights worth planning around: the Cadillac Palace Theatre in the Loop, the Chicago Fire FC Dear Chicago Experience Center on the Near North Side (brand new this year, genuinely great for kids who care about soccer), and Chicago Magic Lounge in Andersonville for a Sunday double that also gets you into one of the best neighborhood commercial strips in the city. Birch Road Clubhouse in Lincoln Park is also on the list for a quick neighborhood drop-in.

Full site list and hours at openhousechicago.org. Build your own route by neighborhood so you are not crisscrossing the city all day.

🏡 Realtor mom take: I use Open House Chicago every year as the best free tour of what Chicago neighborhoods actually feel like from the inside. When my buyers tell me they are not sure which area they want to land in, I send them here first. Walk Andersonville on Sunday. Walk Lincoln Park. Walk the Near North Side. Then tell me what felt right. That is a better filter than any map I can show you. If a neighborhood clicked this weekend, let me know what you are thinking and we can start there. 🗝️🏛️

Loop Arts Fest on State Street

Saturday, October 17 | 12pm to 6pm | Free | State Street between Jackson and Madison

State Street shuts down to traffic on Saturday and becomes one big stage. The Chicago Loop Alliance puts this together and the lineup this year is genuinely stacked. Twenty Joffrey Ballet students performing throughout the day. Broadway in Chicago bringing Jekyll and Hyde. Carpacho y Su Super Combo on salsa and cumbia. Ballet Chicago with Nutcracker excerpts. A World Fashion runway. Free line dance lesson at 2pm. Free mini ballet lesson at 4pm. Simone Green headlining the Main Stage at 5pm.

This is the kind of event tourists walk past not knowing what it is and locals know to block the whole afternoon for. No tickets. Just show up on State Street.

Local tip: Get to Revival Food Hall at 125 S. Clark St. before noon to fuel the kids before it gets packed. Great vendors, fast, and two blocks from the festival footprint. You will thank yourself for eating before the crowds hit State Street.

🏡 Realtor mom take: The Loop is alive right now and it is a reminder that downtown Chicago is not what the headlines say it is. It is Joffrey Ballet on State Street on a Saturday afternoon. It is free. And it is yours if you live here or are thinking about living here. 🎭✨

Real Estate Corner: What Just Happened at 1155 W. Armitage Tells You Everything

I listed a corner condo on Armitage in Lincoln Park this past weekend. Moody, sophisticated, oversized balcony, attached garage, elevator building, right in the heart of one of the best blocks in the city. We went under contract with multiple offers while on the private network just 48 hours after posting it.

In October. In a 7% rate environment. Multiple offers.

That is how we position our properties and that is how the north side Chicago market response and it is the thing I need you to actually hear. The buyers who showed up for that condo were not waiting for rates to come down. They were not sitting on the fence hoping for a deal. They were ready, and they competed for it. We are thrilled for our seller and the buyer that didn’t hesitate!

For buyers: The 30-year is sitting around 7.25% to 7.71%. I know that feels high. But here is what I also know: the moment rates tick down, every buyer who has been waiting will come off the sideline at the same time. You have seen what that looks like in the spring. Right now you have the inventory and the space to make a good decision. The competition is lower. The sellers are serious. You just have to keep looking.

For sellers: What happened at 1155 Armitage is not a fluke. The right Realtors paired the right strategy for a home priced right, in a neighborhood people want to live in, still moves in October. The buyers coming through your door this month are not browsers. They are done waiting and they are ready to write. If you have been thinking about listing before the end of the year, this is the window. You are not competing against a flooded spring market. You are the option they are choosing between.
