Winter Activities For Kids in Chicago

Although it doesn’t feel like it today (Hello Indian Summer!), but winter is on the way and I’m already planning ahead for activities for my little tyke and wanted to share them with you.

1. Indoor Swimming:  Galter Life Center: Aquababies is an amazing program in Budlong Woods @ Foster & Francisco.  http://galterlifecenter.org/events-classes/aquababies

I searched high and low for a quality swimming program for Holden that was 1. reasonably priced, 2. clean, and 3. had warm water.  Galter Life Center meet all 3 and I will absolutely stand

by it.  I just registered for a weekday class and the cost was only $53 for roughly 6 weeks.  The water is always 85-90 degrees and the locker rooms are clean, secure w/key pad lockers and did I mention clean?  They also provide towels which is just one less thing to worry about.  The instructors are friendly and really know what they are doing with the kids.  My little guy even practices his swimming moves in the tub!  I would highly recommend this program.  Don’t delay as open registration has already begun.

2. CPD Winter Programs: As you already know I’m a big fan of the park district programs, especially in the winter.  Mark your calendars: Registration begins on 11/26 at 9am for parks WEST of California Ave and 11/27 at 9am for parks EAST of California Ave.  You can view the available programs on 11/12.  These classes sell out like hot cakes, so be prompt to get into the parks that are walking distance to your home.  http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/programs/2012-Registration-Dates/

3. Gymboree & The Little Gym:  I find these classes to be pricey, however you can enroll your child anytime which means easy and what parent doesn’t love that.  Also, there are many locations and sure to be one near you.  Keep a look out for a Promo Deal for one of these spots for a major discount on classes.

4. Musical Magic: http://www.musicalmagic.net – I love that this is a local find right in Roscoe Village.  What is also nice is that the classes range from newborn to 4 years old…so if you have a brand new one at home, this is a great choice to get out of the house for both you and the baby.  Pricing ranges from $114 for 6 weeks up to $152 for 8 weeks.

5. Old Town School of Folk Music:  This local establishment gets rave reviews from many of my mom friends.  They have everything from music to dance to instruments to art and everything in between.  However, I have heard particular great things about Wiggleworms which is for 6 months to 3 years and includes all sorts of singing, dancing and playing for kids and their parents.  Pricing is about $130 for 8 weeks.

6. Lil Kickers:  I’m a big fan of this club as it is indoor and FUN!  Holden loves it and it really is a nice group of coaches and families.  This is more of a play soccer, not scrimmage!  The kids do learn how to follow instructions and listen to the coach.  I think the bubbles and parachute may top the kids favorite list.  There are 2 indoor locations: Bradley Place: 2640-B W. Bradley (Near the Target on Addison) & Menomonee Club/Drucker Center: 1535 N. Dayton St (Clybourn & Halsted).  Enrollment is always open and classes are pro-rated!  Pricing is around $169 for a full session.

7. Kohl Children’s Museum: strap your kids in the car and head out for a short road trip to The Glenn and visit the Kohl Children’s museum.  This is great for cold or raining days for major indoor fun!  The entry fee is $9.95/person and it is really fun and educational for the kids.  I have friends that live in the burbs and this is a great meeting spot for us to visit and the kids can play.  There is a Cosi restaurant attached so there is no need to pack a lunch either!  Free parking to boot!  There is a Children’s Museum at Navy Pier, but I have yet to hit that one up.  If you have been there be sure to let me know how you liked it.  www.kohlchildrensmuseum.org – 2100 Patriot Blvd, Glenview

8. Pied Piper: Join one of these ‘play school’ classes and your tot will love you!  We have been going to this weekly class for the past few weeks and Holden barrels in and can’t wait to start playing.  There is some structure and some open play which is a great practice for preschool.  Holden is one of the youngest in his class, but he loves to follow direction and participate in some of the more structured aspects of the class.  A typical day starts with open play, art, sing-a-long, wash hands, snack, clean up, story time, and dancing with bubbles.  The class is an hour and it really is great.  www.piedpiperparties.com/playschool – 2864 N.
