Dyeing of the Chicago River
Since 1962, it has been a customary practice for members of the Journeymen Plumbers Local Union 130 to add dye to the Chicago River during the morning of the yearly St. Patrick’s Day Parade, transforming its waters into a vibrant green hue. This dye, derived from vegetables, causes the river to briefly adopt this festive color before returning to its typical murky appearance by the weekend’s end. Positioned between Columbus Drive and State Street, the Chicago River dyeing spectacle can be best observed from vantage points like the Michigan Avenue bridge or the Riverwalk.
